Great Bend Thrivent Financial Office Launches Cards For Hope

GREAT BEND, KS - Melinda Kurth, Thrivent Financial Representative, recently announced the launch of her Cards For Hope campaign. The mission of this campaign is simple: to bring smiles and uplift the spirits of those battling cancer in our area by collecting and delivering greeting cards with encouraging words. Like many reading this, cancer has hit close to home for Melinda. After the passing of her brother, in 1997, and the loss several near and dear friends to the devastating disease, she decided she wanted to do something for those still fighting the fight.

"I have so many memories of my brother as he fought cancer, but some of the most treasured memories were watching him open funny cards and seeing him laugh out loud," Kurth remembers. "The gift of a smile or laugh is what he needed to lift his mood and help him escape his diagnosis, even if just for a moment."

Cards For Hope offers others an opportunity to participate in an easy way with a lasting impact. Throughout the months of June, July and August, everyone is invited to create or purchase cards meant to draw out smiles and laughs from the individuals receiving the cards.

Cards collected will be disbursed through partnering agencies like Heartland Cancer Center, Central Care Cancer Center, and area hospitals. Because of HIPPA regulations, names will not be provided. Greeting cards should be blindly addressed and will be delivered by the medical staff to those needing it most.

"We don't want people to feel like they have to stop at just a card, however. Cancer is an expensive disease, so we would love to see other items placed inside of the cards to further help the recipients."

Ideas of these additional items include: gift cards (to be used at grocery stores, restaurants, fuel centers, hotels), comic strips, pressed flowers, bookmarks, prayer cards, funny jokes, favorite recipes, inspirational poems or scriptures, and anything else that can be placed inside the card.
